Self reflection

Are you moving regularly enough throughout the day?
If you answer yes to any of the questions below, then maybe not as much as you think.

Do you feel sluggish or lethargic most of the time?

Do you often have trouble sleeping?

Do you often suffer from stiff or sore joints?

Do you have trouble concentrating?

Do you often
feel anxious?

Do you have trouble giving up bad habits?

Sitting influences a range chronic illness and is ultimately associated with earlier mortality. The relationship between sitting time and mortality is independent of physical activity levels. This means that the person who sits more is at a higher risk of death than the person who sits less, regardless of whether they hit the gym each day and are otherwise healthy.

Standing up and moving therefore, is the single most powerful thing you can do to minimise the negative effects of sitting. Regular exercise is important, but in order to reduce risk of chronic disease and premature mortality you will need to add incidental movement to your day.

Walking to the office in the morning and during breaks as well as standing at your desk when talking to colleagues, on the phone or in meetings are great ways to easily add more movement to your day.
